Besides the selection and translation of a huge number of poems, letters, short stories and sections of books, the collection offers, before each chapter, a short essay about the author or subject in question. Setting out with the simple goal of offering "American households a mass of good reading", the editors drew from literature of all times and all kinds what they considered the best pieces of human writing, and compiled an ambitious collection of 45 volumes (with a 46th being an index-guide). ![]() Not only is The Drawing of the Three my favorite Dark Tower novel. The Drawing of the Three (Dark Tower Book #2) Have you ever heard of peak Nic Cage? Well, this is peak Stephen King, and by God. Because this is by far the craziest book in the series, and for that reason, I adore it. And Stephen King also throws himself in the story for good measure, because why not?īut while a lot of fans can’t stand how crazy this story got, it actually intrigued me all the more for how audacious it all was. I remember reading this book on a plane and rubbing my head wondering if I was reading all of this correctly. Oh, and they also battle with lightsabers and the snitches from Harry Potter. Okay, so this is usually the book where a lot of readers just totally give up on the series, and I get it. ![]() ![]() They describe the landscape as consisting of the lakes, the surrounding irrigated and dry land, the “wells above”, and the “trees below”. These inscriptions provide fascinating insights into the close relationship that these early residents had with nature. Inscriptions on stone and copper plates show that the starting point for a new village was often the creation of a tank, or lake, to collect rain water – essential and life-giving in this unfavourable low-rainfall environment. In my book Nature in the City: Bengaluru in the Past, Present and Future, I take a deep dive into the ecological history of an Indian city, going way back in the past to the 6th century CE. As my research on Bangalore or Bengaluru – India’s IT hub – shows, for centuries, the population of this region grew because of nature, not despite it. We tend to think that nature and cities are polar opposites. ![]() Credit: Eirik Refsdal/Wikimedia, CC BY-ND ![]() ![]() Bangalore has a long-lasting love history with nature. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He seems to lack any but the most superficial knowledge of any culture but that of Western Europe, and what he had was has gained by reading secondary and tertiary sources (in fact he appears to make very limited use of primary sources at all). His essay on The Technicians and Revolution is risible to anyone who has spent much time around actual engineers, and his essay on The Intellectual Pre-eminence of Jews in Modern Europe shows an equal lack of experience (or experience overridden by expectations) with actual European Jewish culture. Veblen's view on race seem peculiar in this day and age, and although he made a real effort at understanding Darwin and Mendel and applying them scientifically, he appears to have been undermined by his day and age's views on race, both overestimating the genetic variability within groups and overestimating that within the entire human species. However, 68+ years later this is a largely unsupportable view. The Editor's Introduction to the 1948 edition of The Portable Veblen (not to be confused with the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Mckenzie) talks about how well Veblen (who had died in 1929) had worn, how little it was dated. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mona Hanna-Attisha & Mari Copeny, and Autumn Peltier, Greta Thunberg & Wanjiru Wathuti Praise for She Persisted : * " lovely, moving work of children's literature polished introduction to a diverse and accomplished group of women." -Publishers Weekly, starred review "Exemplary. What really goes on behind those perfect white picket fences? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, at the most basic level, social media and the news cycle take away our ability to reflect and think deeply about what’s actually happening underneath the status updates and headlines. The bulk of this book is about the things that we are unable to do when our attention is tied up in social media or the news cycle. There is really no how-to in this book, and I don’t think Odell’s work here can be even halfway summarized with buzzwords like “mindfulness” or “digital detox” or whatever. Instead it’s a really well-researched book on some abstract and sometimes seemingly esoteric concepts: the self, attention, bioregionalism, what it means to refuse/resist in place, and the effects of late stage capitalism on all of the above. The title is misleading as this is not at all a how-to on unplugging or leaving social media (for that, maybe read Cal Newport’s Digital Minimalism or Catherine Price’s How to Break Up With Your Phone).
